Ross makes the all-time top 5

- 9th Jul 2006
Ross Millington

Ross Millington produced an tremendous performance at the BMC meeting at Solihull last Saturday winning his 1,500 metre heat comfortably with a 60 second last lap in 3-50.96, knocking 5 seconds of his previous best and club record to go fifth on the UK all-time under-17s standings.

Jess Coulson also broke a club record with a 4-22.87 in women's 1,500 metres, 8 seconds off her personal best and making her the fastest ever female in Stockport Harriers over the distance.

There were more quick times from the club's juniors at this week's Trafford Open/BMC meeting. Ben Styles won the 800 metres in 1-52.49, Andy Nixon went agonisingly close to breaking the 4 minute barrier with 4-0.97 in the 1,500 metres and perhaps not so young but still quick Bashir Hussain ran 8-29.8 in the 3,000 metres go back to the top of the UK V40 3,000 metre ranking.

North Cheshire Series/City of Manchester 10K

Alan Pover

The City of Manchester 10K saw Alan Pover was first for the Harriers, winning the over-55s prize in 36-43, followed closely by 2nd over-50 Ben Gregory in 37-10 and Jenny Knass 4th lady in 38-16.

Last Thursday was the Dunham Massey 5k, the 4th in the North Cheshire Series of 5, a two and a half lap course within the park, part off road which adds to the course.

Jenny Knass again proved her metal by running another personal best and wining the ladies' race for the 2nd time in 18-33 to show it was no fluke.

Sharon Glendon followed her up and was 8th lady in 20-50. Others who were giving this course a try all with personal bests were Maryte Moore, Jenny Hope and Jane Cocks all in 22 minute mark.

Belinda Wells and her sister Gill Thompson on 24 minutes. I myself finished just on 25 minutes and another member of the Harriers coming back to racing was long standing member of the club Ian Brown in 27 minutes.

Saturday was the 5th and final race of the series was the Lymn 5k an undulating 1 lap course. It was a hot afternoon which again saw Jenny Knass show her improvement by again winning the ladies race and close to her personal best on Thursday in 18-41. This also won her the series overall a well earned victory for her. Vicky Barrett followed up in 21-05 to give her 1st V40 in the race and 2nd V40 in the series. I again ran a steady race to finish in 25-30 and again Ian Brown also finished well in 28-39.

Ladies team winners

Team winners at Sportcity Samantha Thomas, Jenny Knass and Sharon Glendon.

Sunday and the final race of the week saw Stockport Harriers out in force at the Manchester YMCA's City of Manchester 10K at Sportcity.

Was this to be a race to far for Jenny Knass? Well no she was hoping to just be up there and against a strong women's field she finished 4th only 6 seconds behind her best for 10k.

The 3 lap course was not the best as the leaders of the race were having to dodge the back of the field on their final lap. The 3rd placed lady was sent off course and had to double back losing 40 metres which nearly saw Jenny catch her.

Stockport Harriers' ladies were there in abundance which also saw them take the ladies' team prize, which shows the strength in depth we have. Not to be outdone by the fairer sex the men's team missed out on the team prize finishing a close second.

The course according to many sources was 200 metres over distance which perhaps reflected some of the times and for some missing out on personal bests. However Stockport Harriers were there raising the clubs profile.
