Major UK Cross Country Championships

Walter Hesketh

Report: Dave Turnbull -

The Cross Country season comes to an end with the final two Championships, the most historic being the English National on February 21st at the spectacular Parliament Hill where many famous battles between the clubs have taken place.

The Club has been well represented at this race and have produced some notable results, Walter Hesketh who was a long standing coach of the club was one of only two athletes to have won three titles as a youth in 1948, junior 1950 and senior 1952.

Also recently Jess Coulson finished 2nd as an under-17 and Steve Vernon also 2nd as an under-17 as well as a third at Parliament Hill in the senior race when training partner Pete Riley finished first in 2006.

The Inter Counties is the grand finale of the season and this includes the World Cross trial for seniors and juniors is at the Championship venue of Woolaton Park, Nottingham where the best eight athletes from every county team in the country compete.

Without doubt these are the two most competitive endurance races in the UK and when you finish you know where you are in the pecking order.

Good luck to all the Harriers who are representing their counties and the club at both these tough events.
