Stockport Harriers at the Manchester Marathon

Report: Jane O'Hara -

Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Manchester Marathon on Sunday 29 April. The event showcased Manchester weather at its finest: extremely cold, wet and windy, with a bit of hail thrown in. More than 40 Stockport Harriers took part.

Well done to Peter Rogers, James Corden and Rick Lloyd, who battled through the elements to win the second men’s team prize for Stockport.

The first woman home from Stockport Harriers was Kerrie Wood-Doyle. Kerrie was the winner of the last Manchester Marathon ten years ago and was the fifth woman to cross the line this year. Kerrie was just 30 seconds behind the winner until a couple of miles from the end when she started to feel ill. She pushed on very bravely and collapsed on the finish line with hypothermia. Luckily club coach Maureen Wilkins was there to look after Kerrie at the end, and after being expertly cared for in the first aid tent for a couple of hours, Kerrie was driven home and is feeling well again.

Unfortunately, Stockport Harrier Sarah Lomas, who recently achieved a half marathon personal best of 1:19, had to withdraw shortly before the race due to injury.

A few brave Stockport Harriers even took on the challenge of the Manchester Marathon just seven days after running the London Marathon. Stephen Jones finished in a stunning 2.57, having run London in 2.50, and Andy Fowler finished in 3.21 having run London in 2.59.

Amanda Trivett, who ran a 3.37 personal best in London, went on to provide accurate pacing for 4.30 runners in Manchester, supported by David and Liz Turton, who joined Amanda as pacemakers for half the course each.
