Ladies are the Northern lights

IT'S been a busy time for Stockport Harriers track and field teams.

For a second successive year the strong ladies' team progressed to the Northern Knockout Cup final in a high-quality competition at Liverpool.

A battling win over 400m by Minna Kane was one of the highlights, backed up by a win in the long jump and second place in the 100m hurdles by Natalie Murray.

Under-17 athlete Claire McLoughlin had a terrific day competing against senior athletes finishing second in shot and discus and third in the javelin.

The men's A team also qualified for the Northern Plate final, helped by wins from Scott Caine in the 100m and 200m, Martin Clarke in the hammer, Steve Haylock in the 10,000m, Simon Rees over 400m and Ged Cudahay in the steeplechase.

The men's B team travelled to Wigan for a Northern League match.

After leading they slipped to fourth place, a slight blow to their promotion ambitions.

Paul Fitzpatrick produced a middle distance double, William Whittaker was first in the 200m after second spot in the 800m, Huw Morris and Frank Reilly dominated the 5,000m, as did Paul Shannon and Rob Taylor in the steeplechase.

Martin Alderson won a 100m and vet Don Bremner came second in the hammer.
