Stockport Grammar School's Ross Millington recorded the country's third fastest under-15 1,500m time of the year at the Greater Manchester School's Championships at the weekend.

The 13-year-old outsprinted Hillcrest's and Northern under-15 boys' 1,500m champion, Jacob Corrigan, over the final 80 meters to snatch first place at Trafford AC's Longford Park.

Corrigan had to settle for the silver medal in a Stockport Harriers' one-two with both youngsters finishing well inside the English Schools qualifying time of 4 minutes, 22 seconds.

Claire McMurdock (Bramhall High) ran away with the inter-girls 1,500m, winning in a time of 4.46 to qualify for the schools finals in July.

Another Bramhall High pupil, Sam Brown, won the junior boys' 800m in 2.11.

Also outstanding for the Stockport team were the Styles brothers, Ben and Ed, from Cheadle Hulme Grammar School. Ben took the inter-boys' 1,500m in 4.09 with 13 year-old Ed running 24.7 to win the 200m.

Both boys will represent Greater Manchester at Birmingham's Alexandra Stadium at the Inter Counties meeting on Saturday.

Joining the brothers will be Hazel Grove High's Ellie McLoughlin, who suffered a rare defeat in the junior girls 800m, finishing a stride behind eventual winner, Rachael Pounds (Bolton) in 2.20.7.

Andy Nixon recorded a personal best of 4.15 for second spot in the inter-boys' 1,500m and Jonathan Welch also clocked a personal best of 2.01 in the 800m.

David Hicketts (Reddish Vale) improved his 3,000m time by 15 seconds in finishing fourth in 9.29, while school mate Lois Brookes had to settle for runner up in the inter-girls' 300m.

In the field events, Denise Unwin won the shot putt with a throw of ten metres with Sam Riley (Hazel Grove High) coming second in the javelin after throwing 24m.
