Stockport Schools' athletics team were in great form at the Greater Manchester schools' track and field championships at the Longford Park stadium in Trafford on Saturday.

Team members from Stockport Harriers competing at the championships were after qualifying standards to reach the English schools' championship finals at Gateshead next month.

Four of the middle distance squad struck gold and three qualified through to the finals.

Claire McMurdock was an easy winner in the inter girls 800m in 2 minutes, 15 seconds, three seconds inside the standard, with team-mate Ellie McLoughlin third in 2min 20 seconds.

In the inter boys Ben Styles outclassed a field that also included senior boys to win inside the 4:08 qualifying mark. He finished first in a solo run of 4:05 - Jacob Corrigan, also of Stockport, was second in 4:09.

London mini Marathon winner Lucy McLoughlin breezed into the finals in 4:45 in the junior girls 1500m race by over seven seconds, and Jessica Coulson finished fourth in 5:00. Leah Kay finished just behind in fifth place on 5:02 for the Harriers.

David Hicketts won the inter boys 1500m steeplechase and lowered his personal best again by another eight seconds, winning in 4:41. The qualifying time of 4:36 looked well within his reach.

Other medalists for Stockport at the championships were a silver for Ruth Jenyon in the junior girls 800m in 2:23.

Andy Nixon came second in the inter boys 3k, Racheal Boothby was second in the inter girls 80m hurdles, and Samantha Riley second in the inter girls javelin with a throw of 24 metres.

Rhea Fallows came third in the inter girls 3k.

AT the Trafford grand prix track race series last Tuesday night, 12-year-old Lucy McLoughlin ran a fast 800m in 2:15, the London mini Marathon winner taking two seconds from her previous best.

    At the same meet, under-15 top-ranked UK 1500m runner Ross Millington improved his 800m time by two seconds to 2:03.

    Under-17 England AAAs indoor 3k champ Andy Nixon ran a season's best in the 3k race in 8:58.

    The Offerton High schoolboy will be racing at the Inter Counties championships at the Alexandra Stadium in Birmingham this weekend for Greater Manchester.
