Andy’s desert challenge

Stockport Harrier Andy Shirres is heading for the Sahara at the end of March as he prepares to run the 151 mile Marathon des Sables and raise funds for the British Red Cross. Andy will be one of 800 competitors from all over the world braving temperatures of up to 40fC and running up to 40 miles a day for six days.Andy has been training hard for this demanding race and even came up with a unique event of his own to boost his fundraising. On March 7th he ran a marathon on a treadmill in the Village Square shopping centre in Bramhall and raised over £300.In January Andy completed both the Marrakech marathon and the Underround - a marathon-distance running challenge which takes in 42 London Underground stations.Says Andy "The Marathon des Sables is longer than anything I have attempted before.
