Carnival carnage at Buxton!

Report: Bash -

The annual Buxton Carnival Road Race, that has long been a Stockport favourite, took place last Saturday over a very hilly 5 miles. While the overall size of the Stockport contingent was down on previous years, the quality was as high as ever with 2 category winners for Stockport.

Winning this event has been a long-term aim of many Harriers including Steve McLean since he first ran it 3 years a go. With good conditions the anticipation was nerve racking as athletes found their starting positions in a difficult and twisty start out of the Somerfield car park in Buxton.

After a steady start through the Carnival crowd of thousands, Steve tracked Staffordshire Legend Andy Wilton (with a best of 29 minutes for 10k). With just over a mile to go Steve was in a bunch of three some 50 metres behind leader Kev Lilley of Sheffield. Steve chose his final Push to perfection coming from 4th to 1st in the final 200m to overhaul the long time leader Kevin Lilley from Sheffield. A delighted Steve McLean took the trophy and plaudits to be crowned The Annual Buxton Carnival Road Race Champion.

Other Harriers on form included in-form Alan Pover who again took the Masters to task by winning his class by a country mile. Mike Shaw, who has supported Steve with his progress since he joined Stockport, backed him up with a sound run in along with John Parrott and Chris Winstanley.
