Cross country international Steve Vernon and NCAA 1,500 metre finalist Ross Millington raced at the BUPA Edinburgh Cross Country International on Saturday and were up against a strong contingent of Kenyan athletes including Beijing Olympic 1,500 metre gold medalist Asbel Kiprop, 3km steeplechase gold medalist Brimin Kipruto, Eluid Kipchoge 12.46 5,000 metre finalist and also European 1,500 metre Champion Rui Silva.

From the gun Steve took the race out to the Kenyans on the first of two laps and up the steep climb of Haggis Hill with Ross Millington following in the lead pack.

Coming off the hill Vernon, Kipchoge, Kiprop and Kipruto were pushing the pace before the final climb and with 400m to go Kipchoge opened up a lead on the three who closed in together Kipchoge winning in 13.12 and Steve 4th in 13.21. Ross finished 11th in 13.45 but took the notable scalp of European 1,500 metre champion Rui Silva, also Stockport 10 winner Matt Clowes finished 19th in 14.19.
