National Cross Country Championships

Report: Pete Torrence -

The Harriers’ junior girls section travelled to Sunderland last Friday night for the English National Cross Country race, what they found on Saturday morning was 2 inches of snow on the ground and a lot more coming down.

This did not put anyone off and we had a great turnout and even better results with every one of the athletes putting in great performances.

The first of the day races was the under-17 ladies and again Mollie Williams had a great run to finish in 17th over the 5k course followed by Ellen Downs in 63th then Alice Hughes 93th with Roisin Clegg 100th and Sophie William 121st with the team taking 6th place.

The next race saw the under-13 girls cover a very muddy 3k course with Rebecca Jones having a great run to take 39th followed by Heather Corden in 114th then Emma Flynn 119th next Natasha Harrison in 124th and Georgia Bourke in 139th the team taking 13th.

The last race for the for the girls was the under-15s who had to cover even muddier course but it turned out for one of the girls just the right mixture of mud and snow, Katy Whiteoak again showed what a great season she is having when she just missed out of the medals by one second to finish in fourth place followed by Lucy Donaghy in 40th then Juliet Downs in 59th and then Emiley Hughes in 162th the team took 8th place.
