Steve and Elle GB World Cross selection

Report: Dave Turnbull -

Steve Vernon and Elle Baker ensured selection for this year’s World Cross Country Championships at Bydzos, Poland at Saturday's British Athletics World Cross Country Trial at Cofton Park, Birmingham.

The soon to be married couple won selection by finishing second in their respective races.

Elle Baker set the ball rolling by finishing second in the senior women’s race taking the race out to the rest of the field for most of the race and was only overhauled in the final kilometre by GB International marathon runner and National Cross Country Champion Louise Damen

Harrier team mates European under-23 Jessica Coulson came in 9th with Lyndsay Clarke in 180th.

In the senior men’s race Steve employed the same gritty tactics as his fiancé Elle and whittled the field down to himself and Frank Tickne .

It was nip and tuck between the pair on the last lap with Tickner the Southern Men’s Cross Champion just edging the race from Steve in second.

Patrick Martin put in another consistent performance on his last outing on the mud with a fifteenth place and James Scott-Buccleuch in his first county vest ran a solid race in 200th.
